5th grade is a pivotal year. Children are becoming more independent, capable, and ready to take intellectual risks, while still benefiting from close relationships, clear routines, and adults who know them well.
At Millennium, students do not need to wait until 6th grade to begin their middle-school journey!
Our full time 5th grade program offers a purposeful bridge between elementary school and Millennium’s 6th-8th grade program that incorporates all we already know about creating an environment designed for adolescent well-being: challenging academics, real world learning, self-discovery, and a small community designed specifically for 10- and 11-year-olds.
With no more than 10 students, the Millennium Explorer Program gives each child the opportunity to be deeply known, thoughtfully challenged, and supported as they build the confidence and skills to thrive in middle school and beyond.
Why 5th grade? Why now?
Many families begin looking for a new school only when 5th grade is ending, and the transition to middle school is already underway. But for some children, waiting means another year of feeling under-challenged, disengaged, or uncertain about what comes next.
Rather than rushing into a larger middle-school environment in 6th grade, students spend 5th grade in an intentional cohort while gradually becoming part of the Millennium community. They build relationships, learn the rhythms of middle school, develop greater independence, and arrive in 6th grade already known by their Guides and peers.
This is not about moving faster. It is about going deeper.
Students gain time to strengthen foundational academic skills, grow their executive functioning habits, practice self-advocacy, and discover how they learn best. They are challenged through rich inquiry and real world experiences while receiving the structure and relational support that remain essential at this age. For families considering a change, 5th grade can be an ideal moment to choose a school that meets both the child they are now and the adolescent they are becoming.
At Millennium, 5th Grade Explorers will:

Millennium Explorer Program is not a typical 5th grade program. It is a distinctive entry point to Millennium for students who are ready for a more intentional, engaging, and developmentally attuned learning experience.

Millennium Explorer Program is purposefully small: a cohort of no more than 10 students.
At this size, every child is seen. Every student has meaningful opportunities to contribute. And the adults who guide the cohort can respond to students as individuals—their strengths, questions, emerging needs, friendships, and goals.
Our small cohort model makes room for both challenge and care.

Deeper Relaltionships
Students are known by their Guide, advisors, and support team. Families have a close partnership with the school during an important developmental transition.
Responsive Teaching
A small learning community allows for frequent feedback, flexible grouping, targeted support, and meaningful extension when students are ready to go further.

Students begin the year as a dedicated 5th grade community, with shared routines, rituals, advisory experiences, and identity.
Greater Student Voice
Each student has room to ask questions, take intellectual risks, lead discussions, collaborate closely, and develop initiative.
A supported transition into middle school
5th graders remain a distinct, developmentally appropriate cohort while gaining purposeful access to selected Millennium spaces, experiences, and community traditions.
The result is a school-within-a-school: a protected and connected launch into adolescence.
Learning that goes deeper
Millennium Explorer Program combines explicit academic skill-building with immersive, interdisciplinary learning. Students strengthen essential foundations in mathematics, reading, and writing while using those skills to investigate meaningful questions about the world.
Academics
Students engage in:
- Explicit math instruction that builds fluency, reasoning, confidence, and problem-solving.
- Reading and writing workshops that develop comprehension, analytical thinking, communication, and voice.
- Daily project-based learning, where students explore interdisciplinary questions through different themes.
- Integrated STEM and social studies learning connected to clear academic outcomes.
- Anchor texts and rich source material that invite close reading, curiosity, research, and discussion.
Community Building and Individual Growth
At Millennium, academic growth and human growth belong together.
Each 5th grade student participates in a dedicated yearlong advisory designed to help them understand themselves, build strong relationships, and develop the skills to navigate challenges with greater confidence.
Here are some Millennium programmatic themes that 5th graders begin to explore in the program:
Knowing yourself: Students notice what they enjoy, what matters to them, what they are good at, and what helps them feel like their best selves.
Understanding feelings and choices: Students learn to recognize strong emotions, pause before reacting, and use practical tools to handle disappointment, frustration, worry, excitement, and conflict.
Building strong friendships: Students practice listening, including others, communicating clearly, repairing hurt feelings, respecting personal space, and asking for help when friendships feel complicated.
Growing confidence and independence: Students set goals, organize their work, try new strategies when something is difficult, learn from mistakes, and begin to speak up for what they need.
Paying attention and taking care of ourselves: Students use mindfulness, reflection, movement, and quiet time to notice what is happening inside and around them, reset when needed, and make choices that support their wellbeing.
Students enter 6th grade at Millennium more centered, organized, self-aware, and prepared to advocate for themselves in the classroom, in relationships, and in the wider world.
Real World Learning
Learning extends beyond the classroom.
5th graders participate in real world experiences that build connection, curiosity, competence, and purpose. These may include:
- Nature days focused on community building and teamwork.
- Overnight camping experience.
- City neighborhood explorations and expeditions.
- Community-service engagement.
- Library and research skill development.
- Maker challenges and hands-on design work.
These experiences are not extras. They are central to how students learn to pay attention, ask better questions, work with others, and see themselves as capable participants in the world.

Preparing for the Transition from 5th Grade Explorers into Grades 6th-8th
Millennium Explorer Program is the beginning of a student’s Millennium middle school journey.
Students admitted to 5th grade are welcomed with the expectation that they will continue into Grades 6–8, provided the program remains an appropriate fit for the student and family. This continuity gives students time to build relationships, understand Millennium’s learning model, and enter 6th grade with confidence.
During 5th grade, students are part of their own dedicated cohort while gradually becoming familiar with the larger Millennium community. They may share selected experiences such as lunch, physical education, community gatherings, and carefully designed middle-school routines—without losing the structure and developmental fit of their 5th grade home base.
By 6th grade, students are ready to take fuller advantage of Millennium’s distinctive middle-school experience:
- Challenging, integrated academics.
- Deeper Quest and project-based learning.
- Advisory, character development, and emotional wellness support.
- Increased leadership and independence.
- Real-world exploration, experiential learning, and community engagement.
- Thoughtful preparation for high school and life beyond it.
The goal is not simply to prepare students for the next grade at Millennium. It is to help them become capable, compassionate, self-aware young people who know how to learn, contribute, and grow.
Tuition and flexible tuition
Millennium offers Flexible Tuition, a need-based program designed to make attendance possible for qualified families. Flexible Tuition awards are determined through a confidential application process and are based on a family’s demonstrated financial need and the resources available for the program.
Because the Explorer Program is a small founding cohort, available assistance for 2027-2028 is limited and cannot be guaranteed. Please contact Admissions early to discuss the process.
