Gaining further knowledge

There are multiple ways to glean further information about high schools. At present, high schools are busy planning ahead for the fall. Please return to this page later in the summer to learn about the opportunities available for students, parents/guardians, and the whole family!

Enrolling Your Child in Public High School: Guidance offered by Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF)

PPS-SF hosts this popular workshop to help families enrolling in middle or high school understand their public school options in San Francisco.

Attendees will:

  • Discover PPS-SF Enrollment Tips.

  • Learn about the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) student assignment system.

  • Understand key dates and actions required.

  • Receive a copy of our presentation.

Please call (415) 861-7077 for more information.

Student Visits/ Visit Programs

Each admissions office puts their own spin on their (shadow) visit days.  You will be matched with one or more student ambassadors who volunteered to welcome prospective students to their school. They remember how nervous they were when they took this journey and look forward to putting you at ease.

Write down what you want to see prior to your visit. For example, if you are hoping to find a school that values visual arts, look for the ways in which they demonstrate this.

Ask your student ambassador questions about his/her/their experience at the school. If you don't get a chance to ask an important question, write it down so you can't ask it at a later date.

It is always nice to send a thank you note following a school visit IF you genuinely appreciated the time. You can choose to write to the student ambassador, a member of the admissions office, a teacher, all or none of the above! You can send the handwritten or typed note via email or the USPS.

When can you begin scheduling?

Most independent schools will launch the 2020-2021 admissions season in mid-August. Once high schools communicate their timelines, I will share details with you in the document below!

High School Visit Reflection Form

Students have found this to be a useful tool for tracking their experiences at the various high schools they visit in the fall.

Planning for 8th grade shadow visit days

Please use this resource to plan out how to use your time efficiently on these days, whether or not you have a high school visit!

Goal: To get organized and make an academic plan during high school visit days.

1. High School Applications: Review steps on our High School Counseling site under the section “Applications”

a. Timeline for working on applications

b. Guidelines for working on essays

2. Millennium School Academic Plan form

Communicating absences to Millennium School

At least three days before an absence, students should send a message to their teachers and advisors letting them know they will be missing class. They should also ask to meet with them to go over what they missed and/or get help if they have questions. Lastly, they should set up a homework buddy to take notes and collect and share homework for classes missed. This is great self-advocacy and an important skill to have for high school!

Lowell High School tours

Please note that Lowell doesn’t offer a formal shadow visit program but rather an opportunity for students and their families to tour the school. This is a much less daunting experience than the 8th grade Lowell night as the numbers will be limited. If a similar option is available in the fall, the updated information will be listed here once it is published.
