FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

family FAQs

Find answers to common questions about school policies, programs, and procedures to help you navigate and make the most of your child’s educational experience.

  1. Summer Learning Invitations
Each year we send out an invitation to explore a particular theme through reading, with both an optional reading list and a shared book across the school.

  2. My child is struggling to read independently. What can I do?
    • If it’s difficult for them to find the time, help them build it into their schedule. They can use their afternoon work blocks to do their daily reading in addition to their PE/CE assignment, or they can commit to spending the half hour after advisory reading.
    • If the process of reading is difficult for them, encourage them to listen to audio books as a way to engage with literature and be exposed to new vocabulary (as well as just getting fully immersed in a story, which helps foster a love of books and reading). Please check out audible.com, a site that is offering free audio books during school closures.
    • If they are having trouble finding a book they’re interested in, have them look at the recommendations of other students and see what sticks out to them. Or they can ask a friend or advisor for what they’d recommend. It can be helpful to have a buddy to check in with who has already read the book and can ask, “Have you gotten to the part where…?!”
    • Invite them to join Sarah’s book club! She has sent an email to all students with instructions on how to join her in her reading efforts, and she even records herself reading a chapter aloud each week.
  3. How can I guide my child in mindfulness?
Build mindfulness into your family routine! Take a moment of mindfulness together before each meal or at bedtime. Take turns as a family leading a guided mindfulness - your child will be the expert and can help coach you! Ask your child to reflect on how they feel before, during, and after a good mindfulness session. Or ask them what they think the value of mindfulness is, and if they think it would help you be less stressed in this time. Our students rise to the occasion when we recognize their expertise as leaders and teachers, and that’s often when they discover the value in their learning for themselves as well.

Refer to this 10-day Mindfulness Guide for Teens as a resource.
  4. How can we engage with new students and families beginning at Millennium next school year?
We will be planning more events over the summer to connect with the new families! In the meantime, check out the updated Family Map to see who your neighbors are, and for individual email addresses.
